​ The best kind of parenting during coronavirus

There is no such thing as a perfect parent, but we often find ourselves striving toward this ideal. Now more than ever, being a “good enough” parent is more than okay. It may be the best strategy to get through the overwhelming stress of parenting during coronavirus. 

What is good enough parenting during coronavirus?

Your family is safe. At the end of the day, everyone is okay. Even if it wasn’t the best day because you felt frustrated, one of your kids had a meltdown, or you didn’t get a chance to do all that you planned, it’s okay if everyone is safe.

Your family is healthy. You are following the CDC’s guidelines on safe hand washing, disinfecting surfaces, and social distancing. You have enough food to get through the day. You’re doing great.

You are taking care of yourself. Did you take at least 30 minutes for yourself at some point during the day? If not, make it a priority. Hide in the bathroom if you have to, skip the homework assignment that your child must turn in tomorrow, move a virtual meeting to the next day. Self-care is survival right now.

You know when it’s time to ask for support. Talking with other parents who are going through the same things can be helpful. Many supports for parents are moving online.

Your family feels love. Showing your family love every day doesn’t require anything extra.

You are good enough. Your best right now is good enough. Don’t judge yourself based on what you think other parents are doing. If your family is safe, healthy, and loved, you are doing just fine.
